The Olive Tree Market, Newcastle

This weekend, The Olive Tree Market will start their extra markets for the lead up to Christmas!  And, we will be there of course!!

The Olive Tree is a fabulous market, where the shopper can meet the makers of some beautiful things!  One of my favorite places for Christmas shopping…far more interesting than the average shopping centre! And I would much prefer to support a local artisan than a multi-national company!!  Many things are made by transforming the old to the new just like our swords who begin life as fence palings and floorboards!

For those of you who live outside the immediate area, the drive is worth it.  Besides the markets, we have awesome cafes and great beaches!

Competition Nov 2012!!

For those visiting for the first time, Hi and welcome to Schlosswoods! 

This last weekend we held our first ever competition for customers visiting our stall at either The Olive Tree Market (Junction, NSW) or The Newcastle Farmers Market (Broadmeadow).  The entries have been read, the draw been made so I won’t waffle on any longer!

The answer to the question, “Which is Tim’s favorite wood?” is SILKY OAK!!  And the lucky winner is, Oliver from Mt Vincent.  Congratulations Oliver!

Now, Silky Oak.  I thought I’d share why Tim loves it so much.  He first fell in love with it when restoring furniture some years back.  An old piece of neglected, blackened furniture would come alive with some sanding to reveal the beautiful speckled shine that Silky Oak is known for.

The shingled sheen effect in Silky Oak comes from the medullary rays being cut at the right angle.  What are “Medullary rays”?  Good question.  The Wood Data base explains… “The term “medullary” is closely related to our modern-day word for “middle,” and is in reference to the pith in the middle of the log. Ray cells are arranged perpendicular to the growth rings and radiate outward from the pith: vaguely resembling rays of sunlight.”  (ref. http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/what-is-wood/#rays).

The texture of Silky Oak is wonderful too; smooth & silky when sanded (hence it’s name).
