Competition Nov 2012!!

For those visiting for the first time, Hi and welcome to Schlosswoods!

This last weekend we held our first ever competition for customers visiting our stall at either The Olive Tree Market (Junction, NSW) or The Newcastle Farmers Market (Broadmeadow).  The entries have been read, the draw been made so I won’t waffle on any longer!

The answer to the question, “Which is Tim’s favorite wood?” is SILKY OAK!!  And the lucky winner is, Oliver from Mt Vincent.  Congratulations Oliver!

For the 9 other people who also guessed correctly, we’ve decided to award each of them 10% off any purchases between now and 17 Dec 2012! (We will contact you soon with details)

Now, Silky Oak.  I thought I’d share why Tim loves it so much.  He first fell in love with it when restoring furniture some years back.  An old piece of neglected, blackened furniture would come alive with some sanding to reveal the beautiful speckled shine that Silky Oak is known for.

The shingled sheen effect in Silky Oak comes from the medullary rays being cut at the right angle.  What are “Medullary rays”?  Good question.  The Wood Data base explains… “The term “medullary” is closely related to our modern-day word for “middle,” and is in reference to the pith in the middle of the log. Ray cells are arranged perpendicular to the growth rings and radiate outward from the pith: vaguely resembling rays of sunlight.”  (ref.

The texture of Silky Oak is wonderful too; smooth & silky when sanded (hence it’s name).

So, there you have it.  Stay tuned either via this blog or on Facebook for other upcoming competitions, new Castles, special offers and collectors editions.  We are off to The Rocks Market in Sydney this coming weekend (9-11 Nov) and are hoping to organise a competition for our Sydney followers!
